Social Sciences

The division provides social science support to the existing activities of IRTC and also undertakes its own programmes. Research and publication in the areas of Local Level Planning, Education and Health are coordinated by the division. Another important activity of the division is planning and supporting research methodology training and orientation to researchers of various strata, through the Research Scholars' Collective (RSC). Collection and documentation of relevant research results with relevance to Kerala is a programme of the division. It is also engaged in publishing books and documents related to the social life of Kerala. Apart from this, the division also provides internship, project and field work assistance and guidance to students of various Social Science disciplines. A stint with IRTC is a rare opportunity for students to coalesce their classroom training with the real field experience of rural life.



Senior Fellow and Head of the Social Sciences Division of IRTC and a visiting fellow of Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) Anand, Gujarat. He has a PhD in Development Studies from Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore on  People’s Planning Campaign and the Kerala Development Programme. Rajesh has several publications to his credit including two books on decentralised planning in Kerala.  He is a state committee member of KSSP. He has keen research interests in the areas of governance and decentralised planning, public policy research, democracy and development, marginalisation and social exclusion, gender and development, education and research methodology.

Chinchu C

Associate Fellow of the Division, Chinchu C. is a Psychologist, Personnel Trainer, Writer and Research Consultant. His research interest lies in intersectional research concerned with people’s lives. He has journal publications, book chapter, and popular writings in diverse areas to his credit, and has undertaken research projects in the areas of disability rehabilitation, skill development, tribal development etc. as principal investigator and co-investigator. He has conducted a national level workshop and has handled invited academic and professional training in various fields. A member of professional bodies including APA, he is a state committee member of KSSP and also associated with ASCENT, Kozhikode a non-profit NGO.

Project Fellows

Nikhil Sudheesh

Nikhil has been working with IRTC as Project Fellow since November 2017. He handles coordination of different projects and activities of the division. He has completed his Post-graduation from Central University of Kerala in Social Work with the Specialisation of Rural and Urban Community Development and has qualified UGC NET in Social Work. He is an extension faculty and member of Gender focal team of KILA. His areas of interest are marginalisation and Social Exclusion, Sustainable Development, Education and Research Methodology.

Anju B

Anju is a Project Fellow with the Social Sciences division. She has been associated with IRTC since July 2017. She has completed her post graduation in Health Social Work Practice from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. She is also a focal team member of KILA. She has experience in the areas of Health,Disability, and Tribal Development. Her areas of interest are Child Settings, Education, Social Exclusion and Research Methodology.


C Ramakrishnan

Was private secretary to the ministry of Education, government of Kerala. He has associated with curriculum development process of SCERT. With more than 30 years of experience in teaching and education based research activities, Dr C Ramakrishnan have a number of publications in his name.

T Gangadharan

An acclaimed writer and a former General Secretary of KSSP and the AIPSN, he has been the planning cell member of Kerala State Planning Board. He is also an expert in Local Development and People's Planning
