Energy

The Energy division of IRTC is a pioneer in advancing rural development through innovative energy solutions. Over the years, it has developed energy-efficient products such as smokeless ovens and hot boxes. The division also offers technical consultancy for eco-friendly small hydel projects and conducts energy and green audits for various institutions.

In recent years, the division has successfully completed multiple projects focused on energy efficiency and hydel potential studies, with the support of  ANERT and KSCSTE, Govt of Kerala. Currently, the division is expanding its research and development efforts into non-conventional energy sources, particularly wind energy, and is actively engaged in wind potential resource mapping.

Major programs

  • Palakuzhy small hydel project: IRTC is the technical consultant of Palakkuzhy Small hydel (1 Mw) Project. The civil and electrical works are in progress during these period. Division is providing consultancy service related to electrical, mechanical and civil works .
  • Monitoring the Wind turbine installed in the campus to study the scope for wind power production in the campus. According to the power production during the wind potential months (June to September) the necessary modifications will be done for the maximum efficiency, Particularly in position/altitude of the turbine.
  • S N Puram Net zero carbon program: In a project approved by S N Puram Grampanchayat to IRTC, energy division taken over the survey in tier 3 approach as per the guidelines of IPCC for energy and transport sectors. Basic theoretical formulations have done. And based on it a survey format is already developed.
  • Energy audit of IRTC campus: Basic energy usage data collected from all the sections and a methodology is developed for energy audit with the support of Sri. Sureshbabu and Sri Bency from ‘Autotraction’ which is an accredited energy audit firm.
  • Wind potential study: As per the request from Moonilavu panchayat, wind potential locations are identified by the division. Based on this a meeting was conducted at Moonilavu Gram panchayat with members, officials and technical staff. As a result IRTC agreed to prepare a DPR on wind potential sites in panchayat for wind power production.
  • Faculty development program:
  1. Sreejith M S participated in the faculty development program “EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS ” -29th Jan 2024 to 3rd Feb 2024 (ATAL) funded by AICTE, Govt. of India.
  2. Sreeraj P participated in the faculty development program on “Drone Technology” organised by the Department of Aeronautical, Rajadhani Institute of Engineering and Technology on 8  January to 13 January funded by AICTE, Govt. of India.
  • Drone Mapping: Sreeraj P from the division conducts basic areal survey using drone technology, which has contributed in preparing basic maps and reports for programs like OLOI, Carbon neutral study of S N Puram, Moonilavu wind study etc.

  • Drone Mapping License: Sreeraj P participated in 7 days drone flight training: DGCA approved certification at MG university from 18/7/24 to 27/7/24.  Awarded drone pilot license for small category drones.
  • Technical support on Renewable energy provided to FLAME – Fostering Lighting and Affordable Means of Electrification by IEEE Student Branch of NSS College of Engineering (IEEE SB NSSCE) in Palakkad, Kerala. The project supports to electrify more than 20 houses in a tribal village near Kollengode.
  • MSc Projects: Five MSc Physics students from Mercy college Palakkad and NSS college, Ottappalam have completed their projects, under the guidance of Dr. Sreejith M S, as part of fulfilment of curriculum. They were focussing on the wind potential studies of different locations in Kerala.
